Tealights are small candles, set in a thin metal / aluminium, plastic or glass cup and have typical burn times of between 4 and 8 hours.  As the tea light is set in a heatproof cup, the wax is allowed to fully liquefy as it burns.  It is essential that tealights are used in an appropriate candle holder, or on a heat proof surface, as the heat from the burning tea light can damage furniture, window sills and other hard surfaces.

As tealights are relatively small, many people use them in groups to create attractive displays and to provide more soft lighting around the room; t lites being originally developed to keep teapots warm during tea ceremonies in Japan.  Subsequently, they were then used to keep food warm during meals and dinner parties, by gently maintaining the temperature of serving dishes.  You may probably still see them in restaurants today if food is served to be shared.

Eventually, tea lites started to be used for decoration and to provide a soft gentle light, with their four to eight hour burn time they are ideal to be lit and burnt in one evening.  Commonly, tealights are plain white or ivory, not fragranced, and have a diameter of approximately 3.8cm.  However, you will find that we also stock tea lights with a diameter of approximately 5.7cm diameter, these t-lights are also known as nightlights, or maxi-lights, and generally have an extended burn time of between 6 to 10 hours.  Also, you will find that we have a variety of coloured tea lights and a selected range of scented tealights.

As well as lighting your home, or warming your teapot or food, tea lights are today also used in wax melt burners and essential oil burners, the t-light being used to provide a gentle heat to melt a scented wax tart, or dish full of essential oils, to release the fragrance into your home.  The combination of the flickering candle and the release of fragrance from a beautiful ceramic or porcelain burner creating a great ambience for your home.

However you use your t lights, always ensure you have a stock ready to hand, as they are such a simple and cheap, yet effective, candle.
