The Nordic Swan Ecolabel scheme covers a variety of product groups, one of which is candles. To be certified to apply the Nordic Swan Ecolabel the manufacturer must meet the environmental criteria set out by the scheme for the product.
Candles that comply with the scheme criteria are required to contain a large percentage of renewable raw materials. When the candles are made from a vegetable base, there is to be traceability and control of the vegetable raw materials and there is a ban on using raw materials from palm and soya oil. The scheme also bans the use of biocide tolerant and insect resistant genetically modified (GM) crops in the raw materials. As well as vegetable oils, candles that meet the Nordic Swan Ecolabel criteria can also be manufactured from waxes and oils based on animal fats.
Additionally, as candles carry a high risk of exposure to particles, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), etc., the scheme therefore sets out stringent requirements concerning the soot index and the chemical composition of the candles, limiting the use of VOC, heavy metals, halogenated organic solvents and aroma compounds.
